This week’s episode of SmackDown had some amazing and astonishing moments. From Jey Uso’s shocking departure to an exciting return of Rated R Superstar Edge. But the main shock of the night came when Rey Mysterio defeated Austin Theory in an impromptu United States Championship match, becoming the new United States Champion. In this article, we will explore new possibilities for Rey Mysterio’s United States Championship and predict the possible storylines with it.
Before that first, let’s see how Mysterio went on to challenge Theory for the title and not Santos Escobar. At the very start of the show, a video package was shown on which we can see, Austin Theory attacking Santos backstage and injuring him in the process. Escobar however was adamant about wrestling Theory for the title and thus the match was still on for the show. While Escobar was making his entrance, Theory blindsided him with a cheap shot and attacked his injured leg. As a result, Escobar was unable to compete in the match.
Austin Theory then went on to boast about the fact that no one is going to challenge him for the title and that the referee should raise his hands as the champion. Rey then challenged Theroy for the title and then went on to win the match and become the new United States Champion. Now that we have everything cleared out, let’s look at several new possibilities for Rey Mysterio as the champion.
Santos Escobar Turns on Rey Mysterio
As unusual as it may sound but the current story that WWE is telling, it is evident that the disintegration of LWO is imminent. Currently among all the factions in WWE, either they are dismantled like Bloodline or either they are on the verge to fall apart like The Judgment Day and The Damage Control. Thus, it seems that LWO is also going in the same direction as there might be rifts forming inside the faction.
Yes, you heard it right. It is a possibility that LWO might break up in the coming future and the main reason would be the United States Title. We believe that Santos Escobar would not be able to cope with the fact that he was robbed of the opportunity to earn the title shot. And as a result, would start having a grudge towards Rey Mysterio.
We believe Rey Mysterio would happily grant Escobar a title opportunity in the coming PLEs. But Escobar would not be able to win the title and as a result, would turn on Rey following their match. Thus dismantling the Latino World Order(LWO) and starting a feud with his own ideal Rey Mysterio.
Dominik Mysterio Vs Rey Mysterio at Wrestlemania (Winner Takes All Match)
The rivalry between Rey Mysterio and his son Dominik Mysterio was the highlight of the road to Wrestlemania 39. The match itself was highly anticipated and was very well received by the fans too. Rey won the match at Wrestlemania ending the feud, but the rivalry between the two is nowhere near its end. And Rey Mysterio winning the title only opened several new roads for this rivalry to return.
We believe that if Rey and Dominik both of them manage to keep their titles on their waist till the end of this year, then it’s a done deal that WWE is thinking of something really big for the titles. Dominik is currently doing the best work of his life. He also has the NXT North American Championship around his waist. We believe that the feud between the father and son might continue from the end of this year.
And the final end of this feud will come at the biggest stage of them all i.e. Wrestlemania. We believe that Dominik will face his father Rey Mysterio at Wrestlemania in a winner takes all match. The match would involve NXT North American Championship as well as United States Championship on the line. This would also be the right time to finally end the feud between the father and son as Dominik would win the match and carry on the legacy of the family.
AJ Styles Vs Rey Mysterio
The two wrestling legends fighting for the prestigious title of the company would be a sight to behold. Just to remind you that both the wrestlers have already faced each other for the title and had an awesome match with each other. You would also be surprised to know that Rey Mysterio won his second WWE United States title by defeating the likes of AJ Styles.
Thus it will be imminent for both wrestlers to not compete for the title in the near future. If the time is right then AJ Styles could also defeat Mysterio in the coming months for the title. Both superstars never had a proper rivalry to showcase their chemistry. We believe this would be the perfect time to not only give fans what they want but also to the title what it needs and that is Value.
Austin Theory had a very lackluster run as a United States Champion with very few defenses and matches. Thus it would also be a proper time to bring back the glory of the title. And make it more relevant by defending it on a regular basis.
