Bret Hart is a true hero in Canada, even his name drop can get loads of reactions from Canadian fans. Kurt Angle did the same back in the day and got quite the ovation from the fans.
Survivor Series 1997 saw one of the most controversial matches as Bret Hart was screwed by the WWE. It is also referred to as the Montreal Screwjob as Bret was declared the loser of the match against Shawn Michaels. Since then, the Canadian crowd has been behind Bret’s back and is heavily favored in his country.
Throughout his rivalry with Bret, Shawn Michaels heavily attacked the Canadians by mocking them. This ultimately led to the crowd cheering for their hero, Bret Hart on every occasion. Even after his departure, whenever WWE conducted shows in Canada, they reacted wildly upon hearing Bret’s name being used by anyone. One such incident came when Kurt Angle mentioned Bret Hart in one of his promos.
During the Kurt Angle Show podcast, Angle talked about his match against Hulk Hogan on an episode of RAW. The match itself was pretty much driven by the crowd as they cheered for Hogan throughout the match.
The match ended with Michaels interfering in between the match and attacking Hulk Hogan towards the end. The crowd was all behind Hulk and heavily booed Angle and Shawn.
