Shelton James Benjamin is a well-reputed professional wrestler who has been shining in the WWE ring for quite a while now. He has been crowned the WWE 24/7 Champion three times now.
Benjamin has been an integral part of the WWE Universe and it is visible from the fact that the superstar has won 3 WWE Intercontinental Championships and an United States Championship.
He has also entertained the audience in the Tag Team format and won thrice the WWE Tag Team Championship title. Twice with Charlie Haas and once with Cedric Alexander.
Shelton Benjamin hasn’t won a single WWE Championship title
Despite his amazing career in WWE, his crazy athleticism, and his showman skills, he was never pushed forward for a Championship match by the WWE authorities. Hence, he could never get his hands on the Championship belt.
When asked for answers, here’s what Matt Hardy had to say: On his latest episode of the podcast ‘The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy’, Matt explains the reason behind Benjamin not getting a much-anticipated push.
He says, “I believe if you had a young Shelton Benjamin come along today, it would change a lot. Back then, they were looking for larger-than-life personalities, people that really bonded with the crowd, and I feel like they didn’t see that as much in Shelton as they would have liked to.”
He even praises Shelton for his athleticism and wrestling skills and quotes, “They knew, from an athletic perspective, he was just unbelievable. He was unreal. So I think if Shelton came along today, I think it would be changed, and he would definitely be programmed a lot higher than he was back then.”
Matt Hardy explains the viewpoint of the WWE officials regarding the scenario and explains that while Shelton Benjamin is an exceptional wrestler and athlete, he lacks the personality and the charm required to grab hold of the audience.
Matt says that WWE was looking for a personality that is greater than all and attracts an audience like nothing else. WWE wanted someone who could bond with the audience and would become an integral part of their lives.
