Sami Zayn has been a prominent superstar throughout his career, bursting up on the scene through WWE NXT. Zayn made a name for himself in the Indies before joining the developmental brand. Sami recently revealed that he took a huge pay cut after joining the developmental brand in 2013.
Before joining the world’s largest wrestling promotion, Sami Zayn had established himself as a highly talented performer on the independent wrestling circuit. However, his decision to join WWE required him to make a significant sacrifice in the form of a pay cut.
Sami was recently on the Whiskey Ginger podcast hosted by Andrew Santino revealing that his salary took a huge decrement while joining WWE. The former Intercontinental champion revealed that used to make about a hundred thousand dollars a year during his time in the independent circuit. He further went on to reveal that he signed the WWE contract for $39,000 back when he left the independent scene.
Prior to his WWE career, Zayn competed under various ring names, most notably El Generico. He gained recognition and a dedicated fanbase through his captivating performances in promotions such as Ring of Honor (ROH) and Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG). Zayn’s in-ring abilities, charismatic personality, and high-energy style made him a standout talent, earning him respect from both fans and fellow wrestlers alike.
In 2013, Zayn signed with WWE and became part of their developmental system, NXT. While WWE offered him a platform to reach a larger audience, joining the company meant accepting a lower salary than what he had been earning on the independent scene.
By taking a pay cut to join WWE, Zayn demonstrated his passion for wrestling and his desire to compete on the grand stage. His decision was driven by the opportunity to showcase his skills to a wider audience and work with some of the industry’s top talents.
Zayn understood that WWE’s global reach and exposure could potentially lead to greater opportunities and career advancements in the long run.
SAMI ZAYN’S INCREDIBLE NXT RUN
Upon his arrival in NXT, Zayn quickly became a fan favorite due to his exceptional in-ring performances and ability to connect with the audience. He engaged in memorable rivalries with wrestlers like Cesaro, Neville, and Kevin Owens, showcasing his versatility and ability to tell compelling stories in the ring.
Zayn’s success in NXT eventually led to his promotion to WWE’s main roster in 2016. Throughout his WWE career, he has captured several championships, including the Intercontinental Championship and the prestigious NXT Championship. Zayn’s character evolved over time, displaying his skills as both a valiant underdog and a cunning, manipulative villain.
While Zayn’s decision to take a pay cut to join WWE may have initially been a financial sacrifice, his talent, work ethic, and dedication to his craft have allowed him to carve out a successful career within the company.
