On 2nd December, Portugal faced a humiliating 2-1 defeat to South Korea following a stoppage time winner from Hwang Hee-Chan. The Portuguese striker was subbed off in the 65th minute of the final Group stage clash.
Ronaldo was unhappy with his substitution following another dismal display from the former Manchester United striker. Although Portugal finished top of the group fans were shocked after losing to a South Korean side who were almost out of the World Cup.
With new players of Portugal struggling to gel, it was obvious the blame would go on Ronaldo because of his age and the high standards set by him previously. A little ahead of his prime time, it is obvious that Cristiano is not the same anymore. He does not possess the same agility, pace or balance as his younger self.
Why was Ronaldo being trolled by fans?
Following a poor run of matches in the FIFA World Cup, with only one goal from the spot and no significant contribution for the Portugal side, it was no surprise that Ronaldo was the target of the anger of the fans.
For the first time ever, Ronaldo has been named in the worst XI team after the group stage with an average rating of 6.37 across the three matches of the group stage.
An error that led to a goal followed by missing a sitter against South Korea, the trolls only got worse. He ducked off a corner allowing the ball to deflect of his back and in the path of Kim Young-Gwon.
Will Ronaldo start for Portugal in the remaining games?
As for the further games, CR7 has the backing of his manager Fernando Santos who has full confidence in him. The Portuguese is known as the G.O.A.T of football for a reason. Every time he faces a setback he comes back stronger.
In his last ever World Cup it will be exciting to see how far he goes with his team and will he finally be able to lift that World Cup trophy. Only time will tell if he is able to switch his form over the course of the remaining matches.
