But in 2018 she changed her nationality to Kazakhstan as she received better support from their tennis federation. She won the 2022 Wimbledon Open and became the first player from Kazakhstan to win a major.
She spoke about her parent’s support and especially her mom who has been a constant support for her. She played different sports in her childhood but changed to tennis at 6 due to her father’s interest in this sport. Her parents continue to live in Russia. She was always accompanied by her parents to her tournaments.
As she won the Venus Rosewater Dish in 2022, she had to celebrate alone in the absence of her parents since there was a ban on Russian travel throughout Europe due to the Russia-Ukraine war. She defeated Ons Jabeur in three sets in the finals.
In an interview ahead of the Billie Jean Cup, she said that the support from her parents has helped her overcome the tragic loss at WTA Finals. She also highlighted the importance of her mother in her life.
“My mom is someone who I looked up to. Sometimes there are tough moments, tough decisions, but my parents & her especially… she’s the one who helped me a lot”
