Over the past 30 years, WWE has signed 2 Olympic Gold Medalists to the company. Now WWE adds one more to their ranks, specifically to the women’s division.
Tamyra Mensah-Stock joins the list of Olympic Gold Medalists to sign with WWE. The first one was none other than Kurt Angle, who became one of the most prominent wrestlers in WWE, and the second was Gable Stevenson, who’s yet to make his in-ring debut.
Tamyra Mensah-Stock has won a gold medal in amateur wrestling and is now looking to make a name for herself in the world of professional wrestling. This Wednesday on ESPN, she recently announced her retirement from competitive wrestling and she is going to WWE.
“My big announcement is I am going to be retiring from competitive wrestling,” Stock said. “I feel like I have done everything I can in Olympic wrestling. I’ve got the gold medal, I’m a multiple world champion, and I’ve been in it for fifteen years and I’ve had an incredible journey. Some of the greatest coaches, and friends; it’s been awesome. But now, I’m going to be going into the WWE! Let’s go!”
It was later confirmed by WWE on Twitter that the gold medalist has signed with WWE. It’s also interesting to note that Gable Stevenson and Tamyra Mensah-Stock had made an appearance in WWE before. This was at SummerSlam 2021, where the two gold medalists were recognized in WWE. Stevenson later signed with WWE in 2021, where he was drafted to Monday Night RAW. However, his in-ring debut was halted by a heart procedure that he had to undergo. As of now, there are no plans for him to make his return.
Tamyra Mensah-Stock on her WWE debut
After announcing her retirement from competitive wrestling, the Olympic gold medalist revealed that she has signed with WWE. She also talked about how she had no prior experience in professional wrestling before.
Tamyra said that she has moved to Orlando and would start training this week at WWE’s Performance Center. And since she had no prior experience in professional wrestling, her first day at the PC will be her first real exposure to the world of professional wrestling.
Apart from her SummerSlam appearance alongside Gable Stevenson, Tamyra was also seen at a November 2021 episode of NXT. She was seen sitting in the crowd, as she received a USA chant from the audience. This was prior to her winning the Olympic gold medal at the 2021 Summer Olympics.
Fans look forward to the gold medalist making her first appearance in WWE, and going up against some of the big names of the roster.
