According to reports, Cristiano Ronaldo has asked to leave Manchester United this summer. Tony Cascarino thinks it’s because he thinks Lionel Messi might try to break his Champions League record.
According to Tony Cascarino, Cristiano Ronaldo is looking to leave Manchester United this summer out of concern that Lionel Messi will surpass his record for goals scored in the Champions League.
After a report on Saturday that the Portuguese superstar has asked to leave Old Trafford in the current transfer window. It is less than a year after he made a sensational return, United appears to be in a fight to keep the club legend on staff.
The 37-year-old is reportedly eager to leave so that he can compete in Champions League football the following season. Something that Erik ten Hag’s team cannot provide. According to reports, Cristiano Ronaldo wants to leave Manchester United this summer.
After a disastrous season their last time out. United is forcing to accept a place in the Europa League for the following year. Cascarino said he is “suspicious” that the Red Devils forward is planning to resign in order to maintain his incredible goal-scoring record in Europe’s top club competition. Ronaldo is desperate to finish the remainder of his playing career competing for major awards.
Cristiano Ronaldo and his love for Champions League
Manchester United’s No.7 is the Champions League’s all-time leading scorer. With 141 goals in 19 seasons. Messi, on the other hand, is only 16 goals behind him.
Unlike Ronaldo, the Argentine ace will have the option to add to his individual total within the competition with his current team Paris Saint-Germain next season. Cascarino feels the United forward’s fear that Messi will break his record is a driving factor in his decision to leave Old Trafford this summer.
“Ronaldo is a player, as always, that has an ego,” Cascarino told talkSPORT. “A lot of it is about him but the teams he’s played in have been successful, so you always go with that as a team player.”
