On the May 2nd edition of WWE NXT, a lot of wrestlers said their goodbyes to the black and gold brand that built them up over the years.
This week’s NXT was pretty action-packed as well, with a lot of great matches on the card. It was also the aftermath of the recent PLE, NXT Spring Breakin’. Overall, it was a fitting goodbye to some of the best wrestlers on the brand. Read on as we cover the May 2nd episode of WWE’s NXT.
NXT North American Championship: Wes Lee(c) vs Drew Gulak
It was a pretty short match, which saw Wes Lee retain his championship again. Drew Gulak mostly relied on distractions from Charlie Dempsey, but when his help was taken out by Tyler Bate, Lee made short work of Gulak. Wes Lee put his opponent away with the Kardiak Kick for the 1-2-3 count.
Bron Breakker to fight both Carmelo Hayes and Trick Williams
This segment saw the former WWE NXT Champion Bron Breakker challenge both the current NXT Champ Carmelo Hayes and his partner Trick Willaims.
It started with Trick Williams coming out and celebrating his and Carmelo Hayes’ long years together as best friends. This prompted Bron Breakker to come out and mock both men. He was then challenged by Trick Williams. Breakker also agreed to fight Carmelo Hayes at WWE NXT Battleground on May 28.
Gigi Dolin vs Jacy Jayne
This was another match in the rivalry between the former teammates. Although their match was pretty lackluster, Jacy Jayne looked like a pretty formidable heel as she mercilessly beat down her former friend.
Gigi Dolin’s brother was seated in the front row to support his sister in her match. Dolin also celebrated with her brother in the middle of the match. This ended up costing Dolin, who fell prey to Jayne’s running discus pump kick and lost the match. After her win, Jayne went as far as mocking Dolin’s brother.
Axiom vs Scrypts
In a pretty entertaining match, Axiom picked up the win against Scrypts. Axiom countered a 450 Splash with a superkick and hit Scrypts with the Golden Ratio to put him away. Despite Scrypts giving his best, The Superhero was just too much for him.
JD McDonagh vs Dragon Lee
For his farewell match, JD McDonagh issued an open challenge, which was answered by Dragon Lee. The two men put on a pretty fantastic match that stole the show.
Dragon Lee was momentarily distracted by Noam Dar, which gave McDonagh the time he needed to capitalize and hit Lee with The Devil Inside to pick up the win.
Joe Coffey vs Joe Gacy
This match almost saw Joe Coffey pick up the win against Joey Gacy. However, Gacy was helped out by Rip Fowler, who was able to put Gacy’s foot on the ropes. A distraction caused by a brawl between the two parties helped Gacy take advantage and hit Coffey with The Upside Down for the win. This victory earned The Dyad an NXT Tag Team Championship match.
Tatum Paxley vs Dani Palmer
Dani Palmer showed off her athleticism against her opponent during this match. She proved to be too much for Paxley, who was put away with the Frog Splash for the 3 counts. Dani Palmer definitely showed a lot of potential in this match and has the ability to become a top star one day.
NXT Women’s Tag Team Championship: Isla Dawn & Alba Fyre vs Katana Chance & Kayden Carter
This match was certainly a worthy sendoff to two of the best women’s tag teams on the black and gold roster. Once again, Katana Chance and Kayden Carter proved that they can be a hell of a competition to even the best team on the brand.
After an intensely physical match, Alba Fyre and Isla Dawn hit their signature Gory Bomb/Russian Legsweep combo on Katana Chance to pick up the win.
Indi Hartwell relinquishes the NXT Women’s Championship
After her leg injury, Indi Hartwell closed this week’s NXT by vacating her title. She was a huge part of NXT. Afterward, she was carried to the back by Dexter Lumis, as the women of NXT bawled their eyes out. This was a pretty emotional segment that saw one of the most important women of the black and gold brand being forced to vacate a title she never lost. Fans wish her the best and hope to see her in action soon.
