Part of the ATP World Tour 500 series, this year’s Vienna Open a.k.a. Erste Bank Open is also the last chance for one of the best Men’s players to qualify for the ATP Finals. With only 3 spots left for the Finals, players are giving it all and it has come down to the Top 8 players who prevailed to reach the quarter-finals. Here is a quick rundown of the quarterfinal-round matchups.
Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Borna Gojo
Tsitsipas will be looking for a semifinal berth in the Vienna Open. He will play against Borna Gojo in the quarterfinal match today. Tsitsipas defeated Dominic Thiem in the round of 32 in straight sets and Tomas Machac in the round of 16 in the deciding set to reach the quarterfinals.
On the other hand, Borna Gojo defeated Aslan Karatsev in the round of 32 and Tommy Paul in the round of 16. This will be their first head-to-head match.
Gojo is leading in this tournament 4-0 and looks to continue his impressive form. He made his ATP Masters debut in Indian Wells earlier this year and later played in the Wimbledon Open and The US Open. He reached the fourth round of the US Open, which has been his best so far in a Major. Tsitsipas is just one set behind with 4-1 and is definitely the favorite to win this match considering his past experience.
Frances Tiafoe vs Jannik Sinner
Frances Tiafoe will be up against Jannik Sinner in a quarterfinal match in the Vienna Open. Taifoe did not have to fight in the Round of 32 fight against Evans as he got a walkover. Evans was leading 4-1 when he retired from the match. He did have a tough match against Gael Monfils in the round of 16 as he was again behind in the first set and had to fight in the other two sets to book a quarterfinal berth. Monfils won the Stockholm Open a few days ago and carried this confidence coming into this tournament.
Jannik Sinner came across tough opponents in the preceding rounds, Ben Shelton and Sonego but defeated them in straight sets and is looking good to win this battle. He has had a very good season so far reaching the semifinals of the Wimbledon Open, the fourth round of the Australian Open, and the finals of the Miami Open.
Daniil Medvedev vs Karen Khachanov
This will be a clash of two Russians. Daniil Medvedev defeated Grigor Dimitrov in the Round of 16 to reach the quarterfinals. He did have an easy first-round win against Arthur Fils. Karen Khachanov who is currently ranked No. 14 did not face much difficulty on his way to the quarterfinals. Medvedev, the 2023 US Open finalist has been in great form this season. He has a better head-to-head record against Khachanov. So definitely he is the favorite going into the quarterfinals.
Alexander Zverev vs Andrey Rublev
Alexander Zverev will be up against Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinal match. Alexander Zverev had a smooth sail into the quarterfinal round having faced Cameron Norrie in the round of 16 and Sebastian Ofner in the round of 32. The German has won the matches without losing a single set. On the other hand, Andrey Rublev has had a similar record in the tournament so far not having lost a single set. He defeated Matteo Arnaldi in the round of 16 and Alexei Popyrin in the round of 32.
Though he won the matches in straight sets it did not come easy as the first sets of both matches were pushed to the tiebreakers. Alexander Zverev had a good run at the US Open and also won the 2023 Chengdu Open Title. It is going to be a tough battle as Rublev has reached the 2023 Wimbledon Open quarterfinals and also a Masters final. It will be hard to predict the winner of this match, but going by the form Zverev should win this match.
