The WWE Legend Rey Mysterio was inducted into the Hall Of Fame Class of 2023 during WrestleMania weekend. During the ceremony, the legend recalled his past struggles and how his wife supported him and stood by him during the tough times.
The Master of 619 is an icon in the wrestling industry. He has been married to his wife, Angie for almost 27 years now. She has been featured in a lot of storylines in WWE, most recently Rey Mysterio’s feud with his son, Dominik. She has helped him a lot on-screen, but unknown to many before, she had helped him a lot off-screen as well.
At the ceremony, Rey Mysterio recalls how he left his home when he was merely 17 to pursue a full-time wrestling career. He faced a lot of struggles during that time, having to stay in an unknown town with no family. He even had no place to stay and had to sleep in a gym. At one point, Rey almost quit wrestling because he did not have any money left.
During the recollection of his past days, Rey Mysterio broke down in tears when he remembered his wife’s ultimate sacrifice that allowed him to wrestle. She gave up on her dreams and career to get a job and send him money so that he could continue to wrestle.
“What Angie did was, she was studying medicine at the time and she literally put her medical career aside, got a job, and would send me money“, said Mysterio. Angie helped Rey Mysterio with everything that she had, which made Mysterio the legend that he is today.
Rey Mysterio opens up about how Angie helped him overcome his struggles
Rey Mysterio’s wife not only helped him financially but also helped him overcome his addiction. Appearing on Logan Paul‘s IMPAULSIVE podcast, Rey opened up about how he once got addicted to painkillers after multiple knee surgeries.
“So, during my big run in WWE, and after so many (knee) surgeries, I got f***ing hooked on pain killers for a very long time, and my wife caught me. One time, we were on vacation, she saw that I was out of it, completely, so she gave me an ultimatum. She goes, ‘So when we get back home, you can either take your pills, or you can take your family.‘”
He further recalls how he immediately contacted Vince and told him what he was dealing with. Vince gave him some time off and praised him for getting out of his addiction. Rey Mysterio said that he was glad to have his wife by his side, throughout his career and life.
