Iga Swiatek mentioned her special choice of red at the WTA Finals event as a nice one and revealed why she was the odd one out.
The WTA Finals are underway and all the stars have started their campaign for the final trophy of the year. In an event prior to the start of the tournament, all the players were dressed in shades of white whereas Iga Swiatek had some other plans.
Swiatek played her opening match of the WTA Finals against Marketa Vondrousova and won 7-5, 6-0. It was a nice battle between the second and the seventh seed. Swiatek was down by 2-5 in the first set but played really well to push the set to a tiebreaker where she won the set. She learned from her mistakes in the first set and came back stronger in the second set and won it 6-0. She won the match against the Czech tennis player and captivated the hearts of Tennis fans.
But even before the tournament started, all eyes were on Iga Swiatek for her stunning red dress as she set the tone for the evening during the draw ceremony. All her peers were vestured glamorously in white. In a post-match interview with the Tennis Channel, Iga Swiatek was asked about her red dress and she explained the reason behind it.
Swiatek said that she had planned two months ago that she would be wearing a red dress at the WTA Finals. The dress was made by a Polish fashion designer. She wanted to match the Mexican vibe with her attire since the Finals are taking place in Cancun, Mexico.
A mail from WTA later mentioned the white dress code for the gala. Since Swiatek had some other plans, she was quick to mail them back if her red dress could be allowed. The WTA was kind enough and did allow her. All the other players Aryna Sabalenka, Ons Jabeur, Coco Gauff, Marketa Vondrousova, Jessica Pegula Maria Sakkari, and Elena Rybakina were happy to go with the mentioned dress code. Swiatek was surprised that she was the only one wearing some other color at the event but she loved it.
Iga Swiatek speaks in support of the demanding change by WTA
Some 20 players have sent a letter to WTA citing various issues after the China Open but Iga Swiater sent an individual letter to the organization. There has been a rebellion against the WTA, demanding better pay and schedule. The female players want WTA to address the issue and are looking for an immediate response.
The players wrote a three-page letter on October 5th requesting higher pay for the WTA players, flexible scheduling of events, childcare support, and inclusion of their representation in the PTPA.
On not receiving any response from the organization, Iga Swiatek in support of the same, has written a letter individually sharing her dissatisfaction with WTA.
Swiatek has earlier raised her voice regarding these issues and suggested equal prize money in the WTA events as the ATP events. She feels good that the Grand Slams have already taken the step and are offering equal prize money. The four-time Major winner also believes that women are consistent and are at par with the male players.
A merger with the ATP is what they feel can resolve these issues. However, everyone awaits an official response from the WTA regarding the matter at hand.
