Iker Casillas has come out to say that he is gay. The 41-year-old former Real Madrid and FC Porto goalkeeper, who is considered as one of the best goalkeepers in football history, confirmed the news on social media on Sunday afternoon.
Iker Casillas, who was married to writer Sara Carbonero for five years before their divorce in March 2021, got an outpouring of sympathy in the aftermath of his revelation. Casillas has become one of the most prominent male players in history to publicly declare his homosexuality.

Iker Casillas remarked in a tweet on Sunday afternoon, “I hope you respect me: I’m gay”. Before using the hashtag felizdomingo, which means happy Sunday in Spanish.
Carles Puyol, a Barcelona icon, commented to the message, writing, “It’s time to tell our story, Iker” followed by a love heart and kissing emoji.

Iker Casillas announced his retirement from football in 2020, a year after suffering a heart attack in Porto training in May 2019.
Casillas won one World Cup, two European Championships, five La Liga crowns, and three Champions Leagues throughout his 22-year senior career. During his 25-year career with Real Madrid, which he joined at the age of nine, he won 19 titles while also captaining the team from 2010 until his departure in 2015.
Casillas dated beauty pageant winner Eva Gonzalez between 2004 and 2008. Casillas began dating Carbonero shortly after their divorce. The shot-stopper famously kissed the reporter after Spain’s World Cup victory in South Africa in 2010, when La Roja memorably upset the Netherlands in the final courtesy to Andres Iniesta’s extra-time goal.
Casillas announced the news in an emotional statement, saying, Both Sara and he feel extremely proud of the family we are and of having shared a love that has provided us with delight during all our years together.
Iker Casillas said, “Today, our love as a couple travels distinct but not dissimilar pathways since we will continue to be committed parents as we have been up until this point”.
Casillas denied last month that he was dating Gerard Pique’s ex-wife Shakira.
