Trent Alexander-Arnold’s World Cup spot appears to be in jeopardy.
Former Aston Villa captain Gabby Agbonlahor has encouraged Trent Alexander-Arnold to retire from England duty after the Liverpool defender was again overlooked by Gareth Southgate during the international break. The Three Lions leader has seldom trusted the 23-year-old with a starting spot, and the talkSport analyst feels he should now shun global action until a new manager is appointed.
Many believe Alexander-Arnold to be the finest right-back in the world owing to his incredible technical skill, yet he has yet to break into England’s first squad, making only one appearance for the national team this year. His World Cup spot looks to be in jeopardy, especially after he was left out of the team completely for the Germany encounter.
With Southgate under criticism, Pochettino has made his position on England’s job plain.

England’s right-back position is well-stocked, with Kyle Walker, Reece James, and Kieran Trippier all great performers. The Chelsea and Manchester City players have proved particularly difficult to unseat, with both being superior defensively to the Liverpool player.
Southgate is also known to have favourites, as seen by his everlasting devotion to Newcastle vice-captain Harry Maguire, who has never disappointed him wrong. However, he has sparked debate by stating that the 32-year-all-round old’s game is superior to that of the Scouser.
As a result of his lack of playing time, Agbonlahor has urged Alexander-Arnold to retire from international football, at least until Southgate moves on.
“If I was Trent, I would retire from international duty if I don’t go to the World Cup,” the 35-year-old told talkSport. “What’s the point of going away on these international breaks when you can stay with your club, rest and get prepare yourself for Liverpool.
“We’ve seen players in the past retiring from England in the past because they weren’t getting the opportunities. It wouldn’t surprise me if he did.”
