Diogo Jota has lived every professional football player’s worst fear by being disqualified from the World Cup less than two months before it was scheduled to start.
Diogo Jota will not represent Portugal at the World Cup later this year owing to an injury received during Sunday’s 1-0 victory against Manchester City, according to Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
The depressing news was revealed by the Reds boss at the pre-game press conference prior of Liverpool’s next Premier League encounter at home against West Ham. Added Klopp: “Not good news, about Diogo, he will miss the World Cup, pretty serious injury in the calf muscle. The process starts from now.”
Jota is believed to have made some progress in accepting the gravity of his injury, despite Klopp going on to say that the Portugal international will need to sit out for several months.
“He’s surprisingly OK so far, he’s a smart boy, very reflective, and I think he knew already when we carried him off the pitch,” according to Klopp.
In the last seconds of the second half of Sunday’s triumph over Pep Guardiola’s team, Diogo Jota has carried off the field on a stretcher. The former Wolves player has been dealing with recurring hamstring ailments for months, and this is just the latest setback.
Since then, the footballer has also spoken out, writing on Twitter as follows:
“After such a good night at Anfield mine ended in the worst way ! In the last minute one of my dreams collapsed.
“I will be one more supporting from the outside, club and country, and fighting to be back as soon as possible. You’ll Never Walk Alone.”
Due to the injury, he sustained late against Manchester City last Sunday, Diogo Jota will miss the World Cup.
He was forced to sit out the first month of this season since he was unable to play due to a lingering ailment that prevented him from doing his part on the field.
Even though learning that his hopes of competing in the World Cup in Qatar were dashed would be upsetting, Diogo Jota can find solace in Klopp’s assurance that he wouldn’t need any sort of surgery to fix the problem.
From the Reds’ standpoint, it limits the wide alternatives they have available after they previously had to play without Luis Diaz for a while after the Colombian suffered an injury the week before Jota during the 3-2 loss at Arsenal.
In addition, Klopp talked about whether receiving a red card against City the previous week will hinder him from assuming his customary position in the dugout against the Hammers on Wednesday night.
