Jannik Sinner defeated Novak Djokovic for the first time in his career at the ATP Finals in Turin. Now he is just one match away from entering the semifinals of the ATP Finals.
Jannik Sinner was playing his second round-robin match at the ATP Finals against Djokovic. He ended Djokovic’s 19-match winning streak in front of the Italian crowd. It was a long battle of more than three hours to defeat Djokovic.
Sinner defeated Novak Djokovic for the first time in his career. It was their fourth meeting and Djokovic had won all the previous ones.
This win at the ATP Finals did not come easy for Sinner.
The first set was won by Sinner and the second set was leveled by Djokovic. Sinner was leading the deciding set at 4-2 but Djokovic fought back and pushed it to the tiebreaker before Sinner outplayed him. It was Djokovic’s first loss since his 2023 Wimbledon Open final defeat against Carlos Alcaraz.
In a post-match interview, Sinner mentioned how special the win was for him against the 24-time Grand Slam winner. He received huge support from the crowd which helped him stay close throughout the match.
“Playing in Turin, against the No. 1 who has won 24 Slams, we can say that this is the top. Even if I had lost the match it would still have been good in my head because for me the goal was to stay close to him and fight.”

Jannik Sinner calls his win over Novak Djokovic “different”
Jannik Sinner defeated Novak Djokovic for the first time at the 2023 ATP Finals in Turin.
Djokovic is playing one of the best seasons of his career. He has won three out of four Grand Slams and also reached the finals of the fourth. He has also won two Masters Titles. He qualified for the year-ending ATP Finals as the top seed. He lifted the trophy for the year-end ranking of No.1 after his first match win against Holger Rune.
To defeat the No.1 who has not lost a single match since the 2023 Wimbledon Finals is very special for Sinner. Though Sinner has not won any Major, his records recently against the top players have been great. He has beaten Alcaraz, Rublev, Medvedev twice, and now Djokovic this season.
He has beaten Alcaraz when he was the No.1, but he sees that win differently from his win against Djokovic.
“Now I have beaten the No.1. I had already beaten Alcaraz when he was the number one, but I see him differently because we are from the same generation.”

For Sinner, beating the World No.1 who is a 24-time Grand Slam champion and has broken many records is much different from beating Carlos Alcaraz when he was the No.1.
