Jamal Musiala of Bayern Munich barely lost out on the Kopa Trophy for the best player under 21 in the previous season at the Ballon d’Or presentation in Paris. His clubmate Alphonso Davies, on the other hand, feels the Germany whizkid was ‘robbed’ of the title and believes he will grab the Ballon d’Or in the near future.
Musiala has dominated the headlines since making his debut for Bayern Munich last season and has continued to do so this season, scoring seven goals and providing eight assists.
Bayern Munich defender Alphonso Davies has slammed France Football, the organisation behind the Ballon d’Or honours, for allegedly stripping teammate Jamal Musiala of the Kopa Trophy.
Gavi took the Kopa Trophy from Barcelona colleague Pedri in this year’s Ballon d’Or event, which took place on Monday, October 17 at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris.
The 18-year-old Barcelona midfielder beat off Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga and Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala to win the prize, which honours the best Under-21 player.
However, like with past editions, this year’s ceremony was not without controversy, with Gavi’s Kopa Trophy victory raising eyebrows across the football scene.
None, though, has been as vocal as Canadian fullback Alphonso Davies, who believes his clubmate Jamal Musiala was duped.
The 21-year-old defender rushed to Twitter to express his unhappiness with the award organisers for naming Gavi as the Kopa Trophy winner over Musiala, despite his teammate’s claim to winning the most coveted trophy in the near future.
“They may have denied you of your Kopa Trophy, but they won’t deny you of your future Ballon d’Or #GoldenBoy” Davies wrote.
Both guys have promising futures, but it is apparent who Davies believes will become the superior player.
Musiala has 17 caps for Germany and is likely to be a crucial part of their World Cup squad later this year.
Performances in the World Cup are expected to have a considerable impact on how the Ballon d’Or is awarded next year, so Musiala might put his name up to be in with a chance of winning it, as Davies has predicted if he can shine in Qatar.
Musiala is still only 19 years old, yet he has already appeared in 92 games for Bayern since signing in 2019, scoring 22 goals.
He has won the Bundesliga in all three of his seasons with the club and is currently a key member of Julian Nagelsmann’s squad.
Meanwhile, Gavi, who turned 18 in August, enjoyed a breakout season at the Nou Camp, scoring twice in 60 games for the Spanish giants.
