Former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has opened up about the teams he thinks can win the Premier League this season. He said that the Gunners are the second favourites to lift the title, consequently, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City are the favourites.
The Frenchman managed the Gunners from 1996 to 2018, and he has full faith in Mikel Arteta and his squad that they can lift the Premier League trophy this season for the very first time since Wenger led the Londoners to top-flight glory in 2003-04.
The North London club is currently in the top spot with 21 points after they defeated Antonio Conte’s Tottenham in the North London derby with a score of 3-1. Mikel Arteta’s men broke into Conte’s 5-4-1, super defensive formation and scored thrice.
The Gunners are just one point clear of Manchester City as the Cityzens defeated Erik ten Hag’s Red Devils with the scoreline of 6-3 at the Etihad Stadium in the Manchester derby on Sunday.
What does Arsene Wenger have to say?
The 72-year-old ace manager said that he thinks Arsenal are in great shape and their form is a plus point in that.
Arsene Wenger said: “Personally I would put them just behind City. The second-best team to have a good chance to win the Premiership [sic]. Man City at some stage will focus highly on the Champions League.”
Pep Guardiola will mainly focus on UEFA Champions League because he has always been shy of touching the Silverware at the continental Championships. And Wenger thinks that this can help the Gunners to grasp the English top-tier trophy.
“We don’t know about Liverpool, but they’re already 11 points behind,” Wenger said. “10 points behind Man City is a mountain to climb. Chelsea doesn’t look consistent at the moment. They have not found the confidence to contend to win the league.”
He rounded off by laughing, as he said: “Tottenham by my DNA, I cannot be”, which earned the appreciation of fellow pundit, former Chelsea captain John Terry.
