Novak Djokovic is a phenomenon player on the court but he also is a genuinely kind and light-hearted personality. We look back at an incident from Roland Garros in 2014 when he offered a ball boy his seat and umbrella to protect him from the pouring rain.
Novak Djokovic was up for his first-round match against Joao Sousa of Portugal. The second-seeded player was up 5-2 in the first set when the rain started to fall significantly, prompting Novak to take a rain break.
The ball boy held the umbrella for Novak in order to shelter him from the rain. He certainly didn’t expect what unfolded next.
Novak invited the ball boy over to sit beside him. He took away the umbrella and gave him his match-day racquet to take a look at. Then, the duo sparked a conversation on what seemed to be either the racquet or about the ball boy.
The kind and spontaneous actions from Novak captured the crowd’s attention and they cherished the moment with claps and cheers. The duo then shared drinks as the wholesome moment was finally over.

It was raining and instead of letting the ballboy hold the umbrella for him, Novak held it for both of them. ❤️pic.twitter.com/KW6MQfj2cn
While tennis players and stars are the center of attraction between the two ends of the court, the constant effort being made by the ball boys and girls often goes unnoticed and underappreciated.
A seemingly small moment for Novak would’ve been a dream come true for the ball boy. The event perfectly captures Novak’s personality as a kind and humble guy as opposed to the brash and ruthless attitude portrayed by the media and rival fans.
