Cristiano Ronaldo’s sister chimed in on her brother’s latest setback at Manchester United after he was substituted off during the team’s 2-2 draw with Newcastle United.
Ronaldo made his first Premier League start of the season on Sunday, only the second time he’s been in Erik ten Hag’s starting XI this season.
Ronaldo refused to clap the crowd or shake the manager’s hand for the first time since United’s 4-0 loss to Brentford, which sent them to the bottom of the league.
He likely only started against Eddie Howe’s side because of Anthony Martial’s injury and Marcus Rashford’s recovery from an illness that left him just fit for the bench.
Cristiano Ronaldo was beaming ahead of the game as he was honoured with his 700th club goal and reunited with mentor Sir Alex Ferguson.
However, his temper deteriorated after being cautioned after appearing to score a legal goal, and then after he was deemed to have kicked the ball before Newcastle earned a free kick, although the film revealed the goal should have remained.
He was subsequently left seething after being removed in the second half with the game still scoreless, and he didn’t react well to being replaced.
Ten Hag said that with United having four games in ten days, he needed to protect the strikers, hence the substitution, but the forward’s sister was not pleased.
Elma Aveiro took to social media with a photograph of an article headlined “Erik Ten Hag’s reason for substituting Cristiano Ronaldo,” captioned “It’s too late,” and a couple of sick face emojis.
For most of the season, pundits have been tripping over themselves to justify why Ronaldo should start for Ten Hag’s team.
However, the Dutchman has been willing to make huge decisions when necessary and not start most games with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
The all-time leading goalscorer in men’s football didn’t even make an appearance in the last Manchester derby, with the manager stating he didn’t want to ‘disrespect’ Ronaldo by putting him on while United was being thrashed by Manchester City.
Ronaldo had planned to leave Old Trafford in the summer, citing a lack of Champions League action as a significant issue.
There were no bidders for the attacker, despite the fact that his form last season was excellent enough to position him 20th in the Ballon d’Or on Monday night.
It’s not the first time one of Cristiano Ronaldo’s sisters has spoken out about what’s going on with their sibling’s career.
Katia Aveiro called Portugal supporters “petty, heartless, ignorant, and permanently ungrateful” in September after the striker was chastised for his national team performances.
Even before he was rumoured to have handed in a transfer request, she was caught liking a post asking him to leave Old Trafford in May.
