Patrick Mouratoglou recently weighed on the GOAT (Greatest of all time) debate and explained why he thinks Roger Federer doesn’t belong in that conversation.
Roger Federer has had a legendary and inspiring tennis career, and many fans believe that his career achievements along with his aura make him the GOAT of tennis. However, Serena William’s former coach Patrick Mouratoglou disagrees with it.
The Swiss maestro has won 20 Grand Slams and 103 singles titles on the ATP Tour in his tennis career. These accomplishments alone put him among the best tennis players to ever live.
However, Roger wasn’t just a majestic player on the court, but off the court as well; he was a fan favorite. People to this day believe that Tennis hasn’t and will not see the grace and calm demeanor that the Swiss player possessed.
His generous persona combined with his outstanding player resume as a singles player puts him in the conversation of the Greatest of all time.
But not everyone agrees with this subjective definition of the GOAT. Legendary tennis coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, seems to be one of them. He appreciated the Swiss player’s playing style and said there is “no doubt” that the Swiss is unmatched when it comes to “elegance and inspired tennis”.
However, the tennis GOAT debate should be more about the sports achievements rather than subjective opinions.
“No doubt that Roger’s elegance and inspired tennis is unmatched, as much as there is no discussion about who is the Goat. In that matter, sports achievements is the only metric.”
He took to Twitter to explain the key factors determining who can or cannot be called a ‘GOAT’.

“He’s been at the top of his game, even though he played in the same era as Roger Federer and Rafa”, Patrick Mouratoglou declares Novak Djokovic as the undisputed GOAT.
French coach Patrick Mouratoglou recently praised Novak Djokovic‘s incredible, 2023 season. He also said that Novak deserves the nod to be called as the GOAT over Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
Patrick glorified Novak’s performance and his longevity as a top player in the sport. He said Novak’s longevity is something he has never witnessed in tennis before.
“I’ve never seen in the history of tennis someone who is on top of their game at 36, as much as they were at 26, 28. It’s a whole career of being at the top.”
The Frenchman also added that Novak Djokovic played in an era that also featured two other all-time greats Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, and still somehow managed to eclipse their achievements with his own.
“He had one or two difficult years, but most of his career he’s been at the top of his game, even though he played in the same era as Roger and Rafa, which says even more about how an incredible, dominant player he is.”
In addition to it, he also added that last season has sealed the GOAT debate in Novak’s favor forever, and it should be an undisputed topic now.
“I think the famous debate about who is the GOAT, I guess, is completely dead now after this incredible year, three more Grand Slams, plus one final. He has the record almost everywhere of all – number of Masters 1000s, number of weeks No 1, number of Grand Slams – and he’s still playing, he’s still at the top.”
