According to reports, Real Madrid has raised more than €1 million for Ukraine in the last year. The monies were gathered as part of the club’s ‘All For Ukraine’ campaign, and the figure was disclosed during their annual review of last season’s accounts.
The funds were subsequently distributed to Spanish humanitarian relief groups working in Ukraine as well as local partners on the ground.
Why has Real Madrid decided to donate the money to Ukraine?
Real Madrid are far from the only club that have contributed to the cause. The English Premier League gave nearly $1 million to the Disasters Emergency Committee, with individual clubs also contributing.
Andriy Shevchenko, the Ukrainian soccer great, has also been working hard to generate donations for his homeland. Shevchenko was recently appointed as the first ambassador for UNITED24, a platform that gathers charity donations for Ukraine.
What has Real Madrid president said about the donation?
The Real Madrid football club and foundation’s board of trustees, led by president Florentino Pérez, have undertaken 464 social and sports initiatives in 71 countries this year. The club has provided humanitarian, educational, and medical aid to over 50.000 children and their parents/guardians.
Perez said, “Through the foundation, Real Madrid donated more than €1 million to mitigate the effects of the invasion. This contribution represented 1.2% of the total contribution of Cruz Roja, 25% of the contribution of CESAL.
“30% of the contribution of Misiones Salesianas and 88% of the contribution of Epicenter for children, the foundation’s on-the-ground partners, in this humanitarian emergency. The funds were destined both for food and medicines and for blankets, beds and other basic requirements“.
Players supporting Ukraine in their tough times
Shevchenko also recently gave Robert Lewandowski an unique armband in Ukrainian colours, which the Polish captain will wear during the World Cup.
According to the Daily Mail, the Ukrainian icon revealed that he wanted to gift Lewandowski with the armband to thank him for his support and for advocating for peace in Ukraine.
In November, Robert Lewandowski will defend Ukraine in the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The Barcelona striker, who captains Poland, will wear a captain’s armband with Ukrainian flags on it. Andriy Shevchenko, former Ukrainian footballer, presented Lewandowski with the unique armband.
