Stefanos Tsitsipas announced that he would contribute to the relief cause of Acapulco, the area that was damaged due to the destruction caused by tropical hurricane Otis.
Last year in October, a grade 5 natural phenomenon, Hurricane Otis, struck Acapulco and severely affected the lives of many, uprooting several houses and neighborhoods. The hurricane took numerous lives and rendered others homeless and helpless. According to reports, this was the costliest tropical cyclone ever for Mexico.
Greek tennis star, Stefanos Tsitsipas pledged to add $1000 to the relief programs for every ace he hits in the ATP 500 Mexican Open this week.
“I will be donating $1,000 for every ace I hit this week in Acapulco. It’s going to be transferred to the relief programmes for Acapulco in 2024,” the Greek player had announced.
Stefanos Tsitsipas won his first match at the Mexican Open, defeating Roman Safiullin in the Round of 32 whilst hitting 5 thunderous aces. Following his win, the Greek star addressed this issue in his post-match interview.
He said that he had been planning to donate to this cause so that the people of Acapulco could be properly fed and rehabilitated.
“In tough moments like this, I want to contribute and be helpful. So that was completely a no-brainer, that was something that I initially planned from a long time ago, and I really wanted to make sure Acapulco gets fed, gets supported in difficult times,” he said.
The World No. 12 further expressed his gratitude for being able to play tennis and live a comfortable life. He said that the scenes he witnessed before arriving at the arena were a major awakening moment for him.
“And you know, I saw a massive line when I was arriving from the airport to the courts, of people waiting to be fed. So that kind of made me feel really emotional about the whole situation, and I’m happy that through tennis, I’m able to create happiness and also give hope to people that have been suffering for all these months,” Tsitsipas concluded.

Stefanos Tsitsipas faces Italy’s Flavio Cobolli in the Round of 16
Stefanos Tsitsipas got off to a wonderful start to his 2024 Mexican Open campaign on Tuesday as he defeated Roman Safiullin in the Round of 32.
Safiullin had got the best of the Greek player in their last encounter in Marseille. However, it would not be the same case again as Tsitsipas defeated him in straight sets scoring 6-3, 6-4.
His attention now shifted to facing Italy’s Flavio Cobolli in a bid to win his maiden Mexican Open title.
