Coco Gauff after her final match in the round-robin stage at the WTA Finals said that she prayed that the match goes on.
The WTA Finals has been experiencing bad weather for a couple of days now. It is very windy there in Cancun inside and outside the courts.
The final day of the group stage matches of the Chetumal Group was held and one of them was the match between Coco Gauff and Marketa Vondrousova. The final day expected some entertainment as all the players had their last chances to make it to the final four.
The match saw Coco Gauff winning the match from the point where Vondrousova was serving for the win.
Vondrousova was behind by 4-5 in the first set but made her way back winning the set 7-5. Following the disappointment in the first set, Gauff led the second set by 4-1 and Vondrousova was again in a dangerous position. Not much was expected at that point and we were thinking that the match would go to the decider. Since Vondrousova had lost her previous two matches in the group stage, she gave it all to get her momentum back and the second set was pushed to the tiebreaker. She was serving at match point but Gauff managed to win the set 7-6.
As the match went to the decider, it was a fresh chance for both the players. But it was the 2023 US Open Champion who got the better of Vondrousova and made her way to the final 4.
Vondrousova ended her campaign at the WTA Finals without any win.
In a post-match interview with The Tennis Letter, Gauff mentioned that the windy situation was not allowing her to move her feet and she was just hoping that the ball would go in. With four interruptions in the match due to rain, she prayed that the match would go on. She was all thanks to the spectators who were there to support her in the bad weather.
