With a 1-0 win over Chelsea, Arsenal surpassed Manchester City to reclaim first place in the Premier League. Gabriel’s goal was the difference in the London derby, as Mikel Arteta’s team picked up another big win in their bid to dethrone Pep Guardiola’s champions.
Their hosts offered little opposition, but that was a credit to the league leaders’ work and drive.
Fans Reaction on Arsenal’s win in the London Derby
One fan said, “Arsenal has played 13 EPL matches this season and we’ve defeated Tottenham, Liverpool and Chelsea within the space of one month, put some respect on our name please”.
Another tweeted, “Gabriel Jesus is very influential, but is not a striker. His finishing isn’t it & we badly need a striker in January to keep this up. The final third is poor – should have been 5-0″.
A third said, “Manchester City fans and Pep are scared. Because Arsenal is back. Great game great win”.
Match Report
Arsenal opened the game in customary fashion, but were well-handled by Graham Potter’s side, who gradually came into the game as the half progressed. Gabriel Jesus had by far the finest chance of the first half, but he couldn’t make enough touch on a header that he should have blasted past Edouard Mendy.
The second half was more of the same, and it seemed as though the visitors were going to score first. It didn’t take long for them to find it, as Gabriel converted Bukayo Saka’s cross on the goal line in the 63rd minute.
Arsenal might have added a second and maybe a third goal with fantastic chances for Odegaard and Jesus, but they didn’t have to because of their superb defensive performance. Chelsea were unable to create anything like a huge opportunity, as their London rivals hung on for a third consecutive victory at Stamford Bridge.
It means Arsenal has re-established its two-point advantage at the top of the league, while Chelsea remains seventh and faces an increasingly difficult climb to qualify for the Champions League.
Arsenal supporters were not afraid to aggressively and loudly remind the guy who scored 68 goals in 128 Premier League games for them of his history, when he was relieved of captaincy and transferred to Barcelona by manager Mikel Arteta in February.
