Iga Swiatek who won the WTA Finals today dropped just 20 games on her way to the Title, setting a new record.
The weather-affected WTA Finals concluded today and saw another record coming with Iga Swiatek winning the title. Swiatek defeated Jessica Pegula comfortably in straight sets 6-1, 6-0. Swiatek remained unbeaten in all her five matches and dropped the fewest games ever in the history of the WTA Finals.
Since the start of the round-robin format, it has never witnessed someone drop less than 25 games to clinch the title. The player who had dropped the lowest till 2022 was Serena Williams. She won the championship with a score of 32 in the WTA Finals of 2012.
Iga Swiatek who was seeded second coming to the WTA Finals did not lose a single set till she managed to win the championship and dropped only 20 games. With this, she also ends the year as the No.1 player.
Swiatek also ended 2022 as the No.1 player. It was for the first time that the No.1 was decided only after the finals. Sabalenka was much ahead of Swiatek in the points table and had a big chance of finishing as the No.1 if she had just won her semifinal match.
But the young Swiatek who believed in herself did not lose hope and clinched the title. Iga did not lose a single set in all their 5 games. Her record also extends to her previous tournament in Beijing. She now has an 11-match winning streak with 6 matches in Beijing and 5 matches in the WTA Finals. She is just 22 years old and is the youngest to win this title after Petra Kvitova won in 2011 as a 21-year-old.

Iga Swiatek won the WTA Finals today and it is no short of a dream. Ending the season as the World No. 1, Iga Swiatek was emotional after winning her Finals Title and was thankful for each and every aspect of her life.
Swiatek thanked her parents for their support and also pointed at her father who was present at the venue to cheer for her.
She mentioned that her team has been her biggest support and has traveled along with her the whole time. Iga knew it was not an easy journey to get back to her #1 rank and was thankful for her team for their exceptional work.
