Everyone who follows tennis knows who Rafael Nadal is and how incredible his legacy in the sport is. However, he wants his son to take another sporting path for himself.
Rafael Nadal has 22 Grand Slams to his name which is the second-best record in the history of Tennis after Novak Djokovic’s 24 Slams. His performance in the clay courts is second to none and hence he is also known as the “The King of Clay.”
However, despite all that Nadal has achieved and his significant status within the sport, the 37-year-old wishes for his son to pursue a different avenue. He understands the importance of this game in his life and all that the sport has offered him.
The name, fame, and wealth that he was able to gain were all thanks to Tennis. And that is why his saying that he would ‘prefer’ a different route for his son is even more infuriating.
In a conversation with LaSexta, Nadal shared, translating his words, “Honestly, I’d prefer him to engage in a different sport… It’s difficult for me to express this, given all the benefits tennis has provided me.”
However, Nadal also says that he would not mind if his son took up Tennis for himself. As a parent, he would like to support his son regardless. He says he would completely support his son in any field he chooses.
“If he decides to play tennis, I’ll be there for him entirely. I wouldn’t oppose his choice to play tennis, but… it would be even better if he chose a different sport,” Nadal added.
Nadal and his wife Mery Perello welcomed their first child in October 2022. Just three months later, Nadal experienced a setback with a left hip flexor injury at the 2023 Australian Open, leading to a necessary period of recovery that offered him invaluable time at home.
Rafa was unable to make a successful comeback in the early 2024 season and hopes to get back in form till his favorite time of the year: the French Open.
“He hits like he’s never hit before,” Tournament director confirms Rafael Nadal’s participation in the Monte Carlo Masters 2024
Tournament officials have confirmed that Rafael Nadal is scheduled to make his comeback on the ATP Tour at the clay courts of Monte Carlo next month, as announced on Tuesday.
“You never know what he’s going to do, but I saw him training with his coaches on a private court… and I had the impression I was listening to a wild beast. He hits like he’s never hit before,” said the tournament director.
“He felt some discomfort, so he was scared and decided not to play at Indian Wells, but the tests he underwent showed nothing,” he added.
