Novak Djokovic was disappointed at his loss to Jannik Sinner in the semifinals of the Davis Cup finals. He took the complete responsibility and called the matchup “unfortunate.”
Jannik Sinner saved three match points and sealed his victory over Djokovic 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 in the semifinals. Italy defeated Serbia in the semifinal and Australia in the final to clinch the 2023 Davis Cup title after 25 years.

Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti lost to Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanivoc in the first match of their semifinal clash. Jannik Sinner was up for the match against Novak Djokovic in the second match. It was their third meeting in two weeks but a stunning comeback from Sinner helped to make the scores level in the second match.
After winning one set each, Djokovic was just one set away to secure Serbia’s final spot. Djokovic was leading 5-4 and he had three match points at 40-0 in the deciding set. But, Sinner who held his nerves saved those three match points and changed the fate of Serbia. Djokovic saw Sinner take not only the game but the match away from him.
They faced each other again in the following doubles match which was the third and deciding match. Jannik Sinner partnered with Lorenzo Sonego and Novak Djokovic partnered with Miomir Kecmanovic for the doubles match. But, a disappointed Djokovic couldn’t help Serbia again and finally handed over a final spot to Italy.
In the press conference, the 24-time Grand Slam winner congratulated Italy for their victory and was all praise for Sinner’s performance in the singles match. He also expressed his disappointment to lose the match with three match points in hand.
“For me personally, its a huge disappointment, because I take the responsibility, obviously having three match points, being so close to win it. Yeah, its unfortunate really. This is sport. When you lose for your country, you know the bitter feeling is even greater.”

Italy went on to defeat Australia in the finals to clinch the title after 47 years. Italy reached the final after 25 years and was playing for their 2nd Davis Cup title whereas Australia was playing for their 29th title.

Alex De Minaur was all praise for Jannik Sinner after he lost to him in the finals of the 2023 Davis Cup. He quoted Sinner’s previous victim Novak Djokovic in the process.
De Minaur was disappointed as he stopped Australia from playing the doubles match and eventually lost the title. Australia lost the first two matches of their three-match tie at Malaga, Spain, and fell short of their chance of winning the title for the 29th time.
Sinner’s semifinal win against Djokovic was the second win of the three singles matches in two weeks. In the press conference, De Minaur praised Sinner and also quoted Djokovic’s praise for Sinner at the Nitto ATP Finals.
