An unbelievable show from Iga Swiatek helped seal Poland’s quarterfinal berth in the 2024 United Cup.
Iga Swiatek was under pressure as she went out to play her singles match against Sara Sorribes Tormo to keep their hopes alive for the quarterfinals.

Hubert Hurkacz lost to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the opening match of the tie to hand Spain a 1-0 lead over Poland.
But World No.1 Iga Swiatek performed very well under pressure and defeated Sara Sorribes Tormo in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 and pushed the tie to the decider.
Iga Swiatek teamed up with Hubert Hurkacz for the final and deciding match of the tie which was a mixed doubles match. The duo played dominant tennis against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Sara Sorribes Tormo which helped them win the match 6-0, 6-0 in little more than half an hour. Following the win, they became the first nation to qualify for the quarterfinals as Group A winners.
In a post-match press conference, Swiatek joked about Hurkacz as ‘another chef in the bakery’ as he turned out to be a great mixed doubles partner.
“I am happy right now to have another chef in the bakery. No I’m kidding. On Twitter they said the bakery should be closed on New Year’s eve, but here we are. I’m happy I played so well and Hubi’s a great partner for mixed doubles.”
Iga Swiatek beat Brazil’s Beatriz Hadad Maia on Saturday as Poland defeated Brazil in their tie from Group A.

Iga Swiatek is happy to see Naomi Osaka‘s return to tennis and heaped praise for the four-time Grand Slam champion.
Naomi Osaka defeated Germany’s Tamara Korpatsch 6-3, 7-6(11-9) in the first-round match at the Brisbane International. It is her first tournament since she went out of action in September 2022 due to injury. It was followed by her pregnancy and she gave birth to her daughter Shai in July which extended her break to 15 months.
World No.1 Iga Swiatek who is playing at the United Cup shared her happiness for the rival friend’s return in a post-match press conference.
