Holger Rune recently announced that he has decided to re-appoint his former coach Patrick Mouratoglou as his new head coach. The decision comes after Rune’s former coaches Boris Becker and Severin Luthi quit last month.
World No. 7, Rune parted ways with German coach Boris Becker after spending just five months with him. Boris and former Roger Federer’s coach Severin Luthi were expected to lead the Dane to the next level, competing for the Majors.
However, things would fall apart after the Australian Open between Rune and his coaches. Both of them would go on to cite a lack of time as the reason for their departures.
In comes Patrick Mouratoglou. Former coach Patrick is expected to lead the charge of coaching for Rune from here on. The motto going forward for him is to build upon Rune’s previous achievements and to chase after that illustrious first Grand Slam, a feat that has already been achieved by his contemporary rivals Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.
The Dane took to Twitter to officially announce the arrival of new head coach Patrick Mouratoglou.
“Hello @pmouratoglou 😁looking forward to new victories together with you and the team 🚀💪,” Rune wrote in his announcement post on X.
The World No. 7 expressed his excitement for the new stint with his former coach. He recalled all the great things the duo had achieved in their previous collaboration.
“I am excited to resume working with Patrick, with him, I have achieved some of the greatest triumphs of my career so far, and I can’t wait for us to chase the next major titles together,” the Dane spoke on his newly appointed coach.
He shared that there have already been talks between him and Patrick on how they want to structure Rune’s preparations.
“Moving ahead, we have had good talks on how our collaboration should unfold, and we have agreed on a strong setup that creates the best conditions for my performance,” Rune added.

Holger Rune and Patrick Mouratoglou share an interesting history of Big Wins and a fallout
The duo of Holger Rune and Mouratoglou have shared a lot of wins and achievements. However, a series of bad results led to the firing of Patrick. The Frenchman’s fallout with his Danish player was heavily scrutinized event by Rune himself.
Patrick was one of the main reasons behind Rune’s early success in 2022 and early 2023 which saw Rune win the Stockholm Open and the Paris Masters. Rune would also reach a career ranking of 4 at that time and finished runners-up in Rome and Monte-Carlo Masters.
However, when Holger Rune and Mouratoglou split in the following month, there was drama behind the scenes that was revealed by Rune himself in Breaking Point’s new season.
“It’s been difficult, with the coaching situation. The people I hire, they have to help me. Sometimes I am thinking ‘Why are you here actually?’ I don’t hire people just to sit there. So it’s also like a question of ‘Are you doing your job good enough?’ And ofcourse, it’s my fault at the end but I didn’t feel like Partick’s the right thing for me at the moment,” Rune said.
