Moreover, he’s also a front-runner for the Ballon d’Or because of his performance for Bayern Munich last season. And in the new season, Lewandowski has been in top-notch form while Karim Benzema has got a super slow start to his new season.
What did Robert Lewandowski have to say about Karim Benzema and Ballon d’Or?
While giving an interview ahead of the Ballon d’Or ceremony next week, the Polish Striker talked about the favourites to win the glorious trophy of individual excellence and also made a comical jibe.
“Benzema is probably one of the favourites, if they don’t cancel it, then he’ll probably win it this year,” Lewandowski said.
Robert Lewandowski referred to the 2020 award which was cancelled. The Polish Striker was the most prominent name and was seen as the winner of the prestigious prize. But because of several complications and the COVID-19 breakout, it was cancelled.
Robert Lewandowski was the most likely candidate because he was in brilliant form that season. He lifted the trophy of the UEFA Champions League as well as the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich. In addition to that, the Polish target man also scored 55 goals in 47 appearances, squaring more than one goal every game.
Karim Benzema also lifted the trophies of La Liga and UEFA Champions League last season with Real Madrid. And at the annual award ceremony of Marca, the Frenchman went being the most decorated.
After the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo in 2018, Karim Benzema emerged as the main striker for the team after playing the side role for several years. And he did the job very well that no one can deny his upper hand on this year’s Ballon d’Or.
After winning the Pichichi for the very first time in his professional career, the Frenchman said that he wants more. “I feel very proud of my work. I think this year is going to be a difficult year. I always want to do more.“
“I’m going to try and do more, that includes winning LaLiga, scoring a lot of goals and most importantly, enjoying myself on the pitch.”
