Dimitrov was having the best time on the tour when he managed to reach the finals of the Miami Open this year. En route to the Top 2 matchup, the Bulgarian managed to defeat the Indian Wells winner and the Top seed of the tournament Carlos Alcaraz in two straight sets.
However, this incredible run came to an end when his paths crossed against the current Tennis sensation Jannik Sinner. The youngster defeated Dimitrov in two straight sets with a 6-3, 6-1 scoreline.
During the post-match conference, Grigor Dimitrov expressed his feelings of sorrow after losing on such a big stage. However, when asked about a comparison between the level of play against Jannik Sinner and the most formidable opponent he has faced so far, his views were hilarious.
Grigor recalled his experiences against one of the best players that ever set foot in the game. He said that he has played some of the greatest players in their prime and no one even comes close to Roger Federer in his prime.
“The toughest player I ever played at his absolute prime is Roger,” Dimitrov said.
He even remembered one specific incident where the feelings were so bitter that he wanted to just disappear rather than face Federer.
“At Wimbledon once, I remember it was so hilarious that… just… I wanted to dig a hole and disappear,” he added.
Q: You have played some of the best players who have ever played the game in their prime. How do you compare those experiences to what you saw on the court today from Jannik?
