Which country is hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup?

Qatar will host the FIFA World Cup in 2022, but soccer isn't the only sport popular in the Gulf Arab state.

Qatari historians say soccer began in the nation in 1948, when oil workers arrived following World War II to begin production.

In 1950, the country's first soccer team was created. Qatar Football Association, founded in 1960, became a member of FIFA ten years later, in 1970.

It will play in the World Cup for the first time at this year’s tournament as the host.

It will be held in from November 20 to December 18, 2022. This will be the first time a World Cup has been staged in the Arab world.

This World Cup will be contested from late November to mid-December due to Qatar's extreme summer heat.

It is the first tournament to be held in the north autumn rather than May, June, or July.  It will take around 29 days to complete.

There have been allegations of corruption in the selection process. Qatar has come under fire for its handling of foreign employees. 

It was involved in World Cup preparations, with Amnesty International alluding to "forced labour" and bad working conditions.

Qatar is the smallest country in terms of land size to have ever been granted a FIFA World Cup.

They were also just the second country in history to be given a FIFA World Cup despite never qualifying for a prior edition.

Because of the alcohol rules, football fans throughout the world may be concerned about attending the World Cup in Qatar.

World Cup organisers have announced of dedicated "sobering up" zones to ensure that supporters feel secure while watching the World Cup.

Fans are already bubbling up to support their respective nations. As the World Cup is just 14 days away.
