Messi hasn't quite lived up to the lofty standards on the FIFA World Cup stage. The Argentine star has scored six goals in 19 matches at the World Cup.
Argentina exceeded the expectations of many in Brazil and Russia and Messi came close to winning the 2014 World Cup but lost to Germany in the final.
The Argentina captain confirmed the news that no football fan would have wanted to hear. "If it is my last World Cup? Yes, surely yes, surely yes," Messi told Star+.
"I feel good physically, I can have a very good pre-season this year that I hadn't done the year before because of how everything went, I started training late, playing without rhythm."
"I am counting the days for the World Cup, the truth is, there is a little anxiety of wanting it to be now and the nerves of saying well, we're here, what's going to happen, it's the last one."
